Benefits

  • Fine Motor Development: the little steps in this craft helps strengthen the small muscles in their hands and improves coordination.
  • Introduction to Science: It’s a perfect visual for capillary action—the same way plants “drink” water from the soil against the pull of gravity.

  • Patience and Observation: Unlike some crafts, this one has a “waiting” period. Watching the water slowly climb teaches kids to observe changes in real-time.

  • Sensory Play: The transition of the paper towel from dry and crunchy to soft and saturated provides a unique tactile experience.

Materials

  • Paper towel (one sheet)
  • Markers (washable markers work best for the “bleeding” effect)
  • Scissors
  • Cotton swab (Q-tip)
  • Small rubber band
  • Cup of water

Here's how

Fold

Take a single sheet of paper towel and fold it accordion-style or into a small rectangle.

Cut

Use your scissors to cut a rounded, scalloped edge along the folded side. When you unfold it, you should have a long strip with a wavy “petal” top.

Add Color

Lay the strip flat. Use your markers to color the bottom half of the strip (the straight edge). You can use different colours to create a vibrant, multi-coloured center for your flower.

Assemble

Take a cotton swab and place it at one end of the strip. Begin pitching the paper towel tightly around the swab to create the petals.

Secure

Once rolled, secure the bottom of the paper towel (the coloured section) to the cotton swab using a small rubber band. Use your fingers to gently fluff out and open up the white “petals” at the top.

Details

Add any extra details to bring the flower to life! Here, we’re colouring the cotton of the cotton swap yellow as the flower bud.

Watch it "bloom"

Carefully dip the tip of the cotton swab into a cup of water, making sure only the  bottom of the flower touches the water. Have your little one watch the magic happen in real time! As the water travels up the paper towel, it will carry the ink with it, “blooming” the color from the center out to the edges of the petals.
